Notes for Thomas KNIBBS:
We don't yet know for sure, but we believe it was this Thomas Knibbs who was transported to Australia in 1824. He is of about the age of the Thomas Knibbs identified below, and we know he was born in the Charlbury area. There was another Thomas of Charlbury, but he died in infancy, so clearly not him. He would have been 28 at the time the crime was committed but ages were often given incorrectly.
"KNIBBS, Thomas. 25. Committed 25th May 1824 by A.T. Rawlinson Esq. Oxford Assize 28th July 1824. Charged with feloniously stealing a copper furnace, of the value of 3, from an outhouse in Charlbury, the property of George Malins. PCOM2/349 Oxford Gaolers record, Kew: 7th August 1824. Received orders for transportation of (5 men including Thomas Knibbs) from the Secretary of State. 9th August. Removed 5 male convicts under sentence of transportation to Justitia Hulk laying off Woolwich. On Royal Charlotte to NSW 18th November 1824."

travelled via Teneriffe, taking 114 days. On 8 March, the surgeon thwarted
an alleged plot by 43 convicts to murder the officers and seize the ship. He
separated the ring leaders and placed them in irons in different parts of
the ship, which ensured no further trouble during the voyage.
