[1] In December 1902 the, when Alfred was part of the crew, Fantome was one of a combined Anglo-German fleet which established a blockade of the Venezuelan coast. These retaliatory measures were undertaken on account of outrages on British ships and subjects for which no satisfaction could be obtained. Nine Venezuelan gunboats of the fleet were taken to sea and sunk. President Castro immediately imprisoned all British and German subjects, but was forced to release them by the American Consul. A British merchant ship was seized by the mob Puerto Cabello, but two ships at once proceeded to the place, and having released the ship, bombarded the fort. After an eight weeks’ blockade, in which the British and the German vessels divided the coast, the Venezuelans consented to arrangements which brought the blockade to a conclusion. A small force also assisted in the blockade.

[2] During the wartime years, Alfred was drafted first of all to HMS Blenheim between May 1914 and Sep 1915. Former Canadian Prime Minister Sir Charles Tupper died in England in 1915 and was repatriated to Halifax by Blenheim. The Blenheim served as a destroyer depot ship and it looks as if Alfred was assigned to the destroyer HMS Grasshopper up until 1917. The Grasshopper was initially a coastal destroyer but had been converted into a torpedo boat. She was involved in the Dardanelles campaign.
