Notes for William MARKHAM:

I have it from Peter Markham of the USA that the Markhams first moved into Middle Aston, Oxfordshire, some time just before 1785, coming from Silveston (Silverstone) in Northants. John and Hannah (Whitlock) the first parents. Then Marriott their son, and Ann (Tibbetts), William, their son and Hannah (Gibson), then Charles, their son and Hannah (Pargeter) all had large families. By 1901 however the only Markhams left in the village were the elderly Charles and Hannah. Not sure when Charles died but Hannah lived until 1910."

I have in my possession an old family Bible that I remember my father bringing home after his father, George Levi Knibbs died. On the front cover it says "Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge 1698". Inside the front cover is written Smith, Binder. Feb 1834. Whilst the words are clearly printed onto the paper, the dates look as if they were stamped separately so I am presuming this is the date when the Bible was completed ready for sale.

Please view the pages from Hannah's Bible

Inside the front cover is written in very neat handwriting:
Hannah Markham
Middle Aston
Oxfordshire

Above Hannah's name there are some other names and dates which I have always suspected were related to Hannah's side of the family. However, from research by Peter Markham (who's descended from this part of the Markham family) I now understand that isn't the case.
The writing says:
James Cother died
11th April 1851
Sarah his wife died
9th Feby 1850
Emma their Daughter died
6th Nov 1838

Peter has found that James Cother was a farmer from Gloucestershire, who died in Bloxham, Banbury, Oxfordshire. The GRO confirms he died during q2/1851 at Bloxham District. The GRO also confirms the other events recorded in the Bible: Sarah Cother died during q1/1850 (also in the Bloxham District): Emma Cother their daughter died during q4/1838 in the District of Stow on the Wold, Gloucestershire.
We're not sure why the Bible has entries from the Cother family. To the best of our knowledge, there is no family connection between the Cothers and Markhams.
Peter has discovered that in 1851, in Middle Aston, Oxfordshire, there was a William Cother, a farmer from Gloucestershire who employed 20 men, 9 boys and 8 women. On the same page of the census return, we can see Marriott and Ann Markham who are the great grandparents of Elizabeth Markham who maried Robert Knibbs.

On the opposite page is written in very different writing:
J Knibbs
Married Feb 15 1895

Georges baby born august 11 phylliss evelin

J Knibbs is Hannah's grandson James. George is another of her grandsons. Phylliss Eveline would have been her great-granddaughter who was born in 1904, and probably after Hannah herself had died.

Mary can be seen in 1901 living at 12 Medway Street, Westminster, London. She was living with her husband Walter Drury, his brother Alfred, two lodgers and someone named Bertram Phillips who is identified as a son in the census. I assume this is son of the head of the family (i.e. Mary's husband Walter Drury) so I'm a little confuiused over the surname Phillips.

We can also see Mary's neice Amy Elizabeth Knibbs living with them. Amy was the daughter of Mary's sister, Elizabeth Markham and Robert Knibbs.
