Marriage Notes for Robert KNIBBS\Elizabeth MARKHAM:

Banns read at Deddington identifying Robert from Clifton and Elizabeth of Steeple Aston. They married in Q4 1866.

Notes for Robert KNIBBS:

Robert worked as a labourer for some time at St. James Farm, Clifton, Oxfordshire, England. The farm was owned by a Thomas Wright and interestingly, Robert's younger sister Sarah married Thomas Wright's son who was also Thomas. The farm eventually passed into the hands of Thomas Wright (jr.) and his wife Sarah.

It's understood from Robert's niece Barbara that he worked at Wrights' Dairy Farm at Clifton which I suspect is the same place.
__________

Robert was a very devout Chapel man who read a passage out of the Bible every night. He would not do such a thing as clean his boots on a Sunday, attending every service at the little village chapel.

From Jackson's Oxford Journal (Oxford, England), Saturday, August 4, 1877;
Robert Knibbs of Clifton and George William Heritage, John Baker and
Samuel Gibbs, were charged by Josiah Kirby, the Vaccination Officer of the Woodstock Union, with having neglected to have their respective children - Levi Knibbs, Lily Ellen Heritage,
Bertha Baker and Walter Gibbs - vaccinated. defendants gave the usual reasons for not complying with the law, namely, that they considered their
children in good health at present, and they doubted in vaccination tended to promote good health. An order was made in each
case to have the children vaccinated within one calendar month. Mr. Bush from the office of R.B.B. Hawkins , Esq., represented the Guardians.

Again, from Jackson's Oxford Journal (Oxford, England), Saturday, January 14, 1888;
At Bampton West Division Petty Sessions, Burford January 6.
Herbert Harwood was fined 12s., John Baker 10s., and Robert Knibbs 11w., for non-compliance with the Vaccinations Act.

This is the house at 1 Victoria Row, Clifton (click to enlarge) where Robert lived with his wife and children. The house remained in the family for several generations. Robert's great-grandson Colin Rapley was also born there. Robert's son Walter, moved to 3 Victoria Row in 1948 after his wife died. the middle house was occupied by a Mr & Mrs Bowerman.
Colin Rapley has told me that the cottage was very old fashioned even in the 1940's. They still collected water from the village well, used oil lamps and of course had an outside toilet. A pig was kept at the bottom of the garden and when killed and salted was hung in the kitchen.

The Chapel at the far end of the row of cottages is St James Chapel, consecrated on 10th June 1853. The land on which it is built was believed to have been given by Mr Wright of St James Farm, Clifton, when it was built in 1851. As mentioned above, Robert Knibbs was employed as a labourer by Mr Wright at St James Farm, and Robert's younger sister Sarah eventually married Thomas Wright junior who inherited the farm from his father.
