Edwin was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England in 1901, the 8th of 12 children born to his parents Charles KNIBBS and Hannah Elizabeth SMALLWOOD. He had 10 sisters and one brother.

He married Edith Castle and they had two children, Jean and Sheila.

This photograph was taken on his 21st birthday in 1922.
